Gold’s Gym in North Providence was the setting recently for Nicole Costa’s Fitness Model Boot-Camp. Nicole, a pro fitness model, Oxygen Magazine Cover Model and Miss Model Universe 2007, shared her winning secrets with several aspiring models and athletes who will be participating in the upcoming FAME Model Search.

At the “Boot-Camp” event, participants learned about proper posture, posing and walking techniques. They also learned about what judges look for in a fitness model… Most importantly, Nicole advised the group on self-confidence and attitude – A “must” for aspiring models and athletes! Other tips from Nicole included advice on how to determine what category of modeling participants should consider for themselves… Fitness Model, Muscle/Athlete Model and/or Bikini Model…

Tips/Secrets from Nicole included the following when determining your category of modeling:
  • Fitness Model: Ideal for lean, fit, toned, athletic, symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing individuals who wish to pursue a career as a fitness model and appear in magazines. The “Look” for this type of modeling is not just one specific look… Rather it’s an overall package and how well your leanness, tone and fitness level compliments your skeletal structure, personality and physique. In this category, judges look for good muscle tone, posture, symmetry, confidence, charisma, lean body composition, ability to pose in interesting and photographable ways as well as clothing that properly highlights their fit physique. A fitness model’s body should be balanced and symmetrical (upper vs lower body, front vs back, ratio of chest to hips), abs should be visible or somewhat visible, but striations and vascularity should be minimal. Judges look for great attitude, impeccable grooming, and good outfit selection which accentuates both the physique and athlete’s personality. Fitness models should appear comfortable and relaxed onstage unlike bodybuilders who typically assume a more rigid stance.
  • Muscle (Athlete) Model: This category is ideal for muscular individuals who have both definition and mass and who could also compete in bodybuilding. Overall, judges are looking for excellent muscle tone, definition and everything under the “fitness” model category. These “athlete” physiques are compared and ranked against each other. They are also given individual point scores based on their walk-out. Confidence, poise, outfit, overall appearance and style of turns are also evaluated through-out. Athlete/Muscle models must appear comfortable on stage and not as rigid as bodybuilding and figure competitors. They should show some personality and appear as though they enjoy being in the spotlight.
  • Bikini Model: This category is designed for attractive, healthy, vibrant and shapely females who exude confidence and a great body! Models do not need to be toned for this category although they should still be in shape. There is no routine component and only 1 round of competition. Judges are looking to ensure your shape and symmetry suit your skeletal frame and personality. Models are marked on posture, body symmetry, confidence and projection, style and fluidity of walks and turns, marketability and general impression. Judges are also looking for a vibrant, healthy look, a great attitude, impeccable grooming, and good suit selection. Models should seem relaxed and look like they are having a great time!

Other tips that Nicole included in the training included advice on stage presence, posing, walking, quarter turns, what you should do while being judged, what you should do when you are not being judged. Additional tips were given on apparel…. Pay attention to styles, cuts, colors, patterns and fits that flatter and accentuate personality… Be sure to wear an outfit or suit that looks and fits your body and remember to hide flaws.
