GYM CHICK'S GUIDE TO CHOOSING A GYM

Things to consider & questions to ask yourself before signing on the dotted line:

  • Location! Location! Location! Be sure to choose a gym that is close to home OR in between your home and your job. This will give you no excuse for not stopping and getting a workout in. Convenience is important.
  • Check out a gym at a time when you would most likely be going. It will give you a feel as to the crowd and the type of clientele.
  • Childcare Services: Do they offer free or affordable childcare services? This could have an impact on your budget and the amount you are able to spend on a membership.
  • Visit during a peak time to evaluate trainers. Are they attentive to their clients? Do they pay close attention to their client's form?
  • Does the gym have a good mix of free weights and machines?
  • Are there enough cardio machine choices to keep you motivated and hold your interest?
  • How are the classes? Is there enough variety?
  • Will you be comfortable there?
  • Is the gym clean or is the equipment in need of a good dusting? Chances are that if the equipment is not clean, not much attention is paid to maintenance.
  • Are the showers clean?? Remember, you're going to be naked in there... Is it "sparkling" or does it smell of mold?
  • Don't be shy... Ask others working out there how they like it. They may be able to fill you in on a few things you need to know (or didn't want to know!)
  • Do they offer flexible contracts? Can you end it upon expiration or does the contract self renew without notice?
  • Many gyms offer a free pass. Don't be afraid to ask for more than just a 1-day pass. Many gyms offer 2-week passes if you ask.
  • Is the staff friendly, helpful? Most importantly, are they knowledgeable?
